The Hollow: Chapter 31We got back in formation and continued down the cavern. I tried my best to ignore the pain in my back, but EDI chose to give me a small dose of painkillers. The Hollow: Chapter 31 by Joester264
The journey down took about two more hours and we were lucky to avoid any more patrols.
It wasn't until we reached the Locust stronghold, Nexus, as Baird referred to it, that we spotted quantities of Grubs.
We were near a larger tunnel when we saw an army of them on the march. Thousands of them moved in well organized groups.
I didn't know at the time that they were on their way towards Ilima City.
Regardless, we kept moving until we reached a bridge that was placed over where we needed to go.
"Spartan" EDI said, "We are getting close to where Doctor T'Raza and Lieutenant Commander Ambrose are being held".
All of us were moving at a crouch as we crept our way down the bridge, speaking in whispers and hand movements.
"Acknowledged" I said in a low voice and turned to everyone, "We're almost there, people".
We went down a spiraling s
The Hollow: Chapter 32When I arrived, I could see Mickey and Liara pulling on the latch: Liara's arms were wrapped around Mickey's waist as he pulled. The Hollow: Chapter 32 by Joester264
"Should I take a photo?" EDI asked me, quietly.
I chuckled, "Nah, it'd be rude."
Liara saw me and unhooked her arms around Mickey, "If you wouldn't mind, Joe. We could use some help".
Mickey groaned, "Man! It just won't budge!"
"Here, Mickey" I said, "Let me show you how it's done".
He stepped out of the way as I grabbed the latch. I pulled, and it was surprisingly more difficult than T'Raza's. I made a few strained grunts as I pulled harder, until the latch started to slowly move. Finally, it broke free and the capsule door swung wide open.
I looked inside to see Ambrose standing there.
"Sir, are you alright?" I asked, concerned.
He nodded, "I'm fine, Joe. Thanks for the rescue". He stepped out of the container, then looked at the three of us. "Are there more of you?"
"Yes, Tali and Corporal Baird are helping Alosa's mother, Dr. T'Raza".

The Hollow: Chapter 30We traversed the caverns that would lead us to Ambrose and T'Raza. Mickey and Baird were positioned in the back while Liara and Tali watched the flanks. The Hollow: Chapter 30 by Joester264
"So, Baird," Mickey said, "How do you know so much about the Locust?"
He replied in a surprisingly non-aggressive tone. "I used to be a Lieutenant in the Engineering Division. ONI tasked me and a few others to scout out any possible building sites so they could build a new base. When we arrived, we encountered the Locust. I spent three weeks down here, fighting for my life".
"What got you demoted?"
His voice was now its usual abrasiveness, "I didn't follow orders and got the rest of the team killed. Why are you so frigging curious?!"
"I was just wondering, that's all".
EDI whispered in my ear, "I'm detecting movement, heading this way".
I held up a closed fist and everyone froze. "Can you tell what's coming?"
"Solid copy. Everyone, get down".
We dove behind various rocks that were big enough to provide adequate cover. Liara
The Hollow: Chapter 22The ride to the outpost lasted twenty minutes, but no one said a word the whole way there. When we arrived, it didn't look like a standard UNSC base; it was more like a fortress. The whole outpost was two miles across, buildings towered over the roads. Light AA Guns lined the twenty foot high walls, and Scorpion tanks were positioned at the front gate as we drove past them. But on the inside, it was a whole other story. The Hollow: Chapter 22 by Joester264
Refugees and their families were on the sidewalks, with tents sprouting here and there. We were going five miles an hour, at the most, which made the Hogs' engines quiet as we moved through the streets. I could hear the civilians' anguish. Mothers and fathers trying to calm their crying children, screams of pain, and occasionally, someone trying to find their loved ones."Have you seen my son?", "Please help me, I'm looking for my brothers!"
But the one that got me the most was a small asari looking for her parents. "Momma?" She'd go up to strangers, "Where's my mommy? M

"Head to bay D24, Cortez" Shepard said to the pilot. Meanwhile, Ann gave Shem to Ashley and headed to the co-pilot seat. Ann was a savant at flying UT-47 Kodiak shuttles. It was a little cramped, so Saber and I stood while everyone else sat down. Shepard looked over to Ashley, "How's our little crew member doing?" Ash, we started calling her, replied with "Shem is doing great Commander". "Good to hear" Shepard said warmly, probably for the baby's behalf, and looked at me. I had my helmet on, but I swear she looked straight through my visor.
"I suppose you're curious about what we're doing, huh?" Most Spartans keep their emotions to themselves or with their squad members. As for me, I tend to be a little vocal when I'm annoyed. After being kept in the dark for a while, I replied in a cold tone, "Yeah, I am". Shepard didn't seem offended, and she stood up "Well, let's just say you and your team have been reassigned".
"With what?" She reached into her left pocket, pulled out a s
